Why use an Exposure Coach for OCD?

At Kairos Wellness Collective, we are proud to offer holistic treatment for OCD which includes CBT therapy, EMDR, Acupuncture, and Wilderness Therapy.  Our most common route of services includes CBT Therapy paired with an at-home exposure coach.

Many clients question why this might be necessary. They may think they can handle it on their own.

However, for most of us, OCD is far more entrenched than we even realize when we begin treatment.  Exposure homework gets avoided week after week, and our clients’ progress is slow.

Regular repetition of therapy exposures is the quickest path to healing!

At-home exposure coaching basically helps adults and children actualize the goals of therapy between sessions.

Like coaching for physical wellness, exposure coaching benefits the client by creating a forcing mechanism for getting the “workout” (or in our case “exposure”) done correctly.

Clients feel a sense of accomplishment every time they succeed in a session of exposure and begin to invest more in the process of reaching the mental health finish line.

Like working out, exposure benefits supremely from repetitions.

Almost every time we practice an exposure to a fear, we step down the ladder in reactivity, and ensure that the phobia grips us less and less.  Whenever we manage to not do our compulsions, we lessen the brain’s  link between the compulsion and safety from the obsession.

And finally, many of us save the lion’s share of our obsessions and compulsions for our home space.  While it may be very uncomfortable to have someone come into our safe space to try to support us in breaking our compulsive systems, an exposure coach may learn more than even the therapist regarding the presentations of OCD that our client is facing.  The home provides a wealth of material to work on to defeat OCD and helps ensure that lessons learned in the therapy office are actually applied in real life.
