Couples Therapy

  • Do you feel like you are an impasse with your partner?

  • Are you struggling to feel understood in an intimate way?

  • Are you and your spouse focused on your career or children, and no longer deeply connecting?

At Kairos Wellness Collective, we have couples therapists with various strengths, including relationships challenged by OCD and Anxiety, neurodiversity in couples, and intimacy coaching.  Couples therapy can be beneficial for couples who need professional guidance to improve their connection. Here are some reasons why couples may seek couples therapy:

  1. Communication Issues: Couples may struggle with communication problems, such as frequent arguments, difficulty expressing their needs or feelings, or feeling misunderstood by their partner. Couples therapy can help improve communication skills and teach healthier ways of expressing emotions and resolving conflicts.

  2. Conflict Resolution: Couples often face conflicts and disagreements that can become repetitive and escalate into larger issues. Couples therapy can provide a safe and structured environment for couples to learn and practice effective conflict resolution strategies, fostering healthier and more productive discussions.

  3. Intimacy and Connection: Over time, couples may experience a decline in emotional or physical intimacy. Couples therapy can help partners understand the factors contributing to the loss of intimacy, rebuild emotional connections, and enhance their overall closeness and intimacy.

  4. Infidelity or Trust Issues: Recovering from infidelity or rebuilding trust after a breach can be extremely challenging for couples. Couples therapy can provide a supportive space to address the underlying issues, process emotions, and work towards healing and rebuilding trust in the relationship.

  5. Life Transitions and Adjustments: Major life transitions, such as becoming parents, empty nesting, or changes in careers, can impact the dynamics of a relationship. Couples therapy can assist partners in navigating these transitions, managing stress, and adapting to the new circumstances.

  6. Pre-Marital or Pre-Commitment Counseling: Couples who are considering a long-term commitment or marriage can benefit from couples therapy as a way to explore and address potential challenges, establish effective communication patterns, and set shared goals for the future.

  7. Blended Family Issues: Couples who have formed blended families may face unique challenges in terms of parenting, discipline, and blending different family systems. Couples therapy can provide guidance and support in navigating these complexities and fostering harmony within the blended family.

  8. Relationship Enrichment: Even in relatively healthy relationships, couples therapy can be a valuable tool for strengthening the bond, deepening understanding, and further enhancing the relationship's overall satisfaction and fulfillment.

Couples therapy offers a structured and supportive environment where couples can work on their relationship, develop new skills, gain insights, and overcome challenges together. It provides an opportunity for growth, increased self-awareness, and improved relationship dynamics. It's important for couples to approach therapy with a commitment to the process and a willingness to engage actively in the therapeutic work.

Couples therapy at Kairos Wellness Collective is an integrative model which utilizes various approaches and techniques to address relationship issues and promote healthier interactions and communication between partners. Here are some of the approaches used in couples therapy:

  1. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): EFT focuses on identifying and transforming negative patterns of interaction that lead to distress and conflict in the relationship. It emphasizes creating secure emotional bonds between partners and enhancing their ability to respond to each other's emotional needs.

  2. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT in couples therapy helps partners identify and modify unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that contribute to relationship problems. It focuses on improving communication, problem-solving skills, and managing conflicts effectively.

  3. Solution-Focused Therapy: Solution-focused therapy focuses on identifying and building on the strengths and resources within the relationship. It emphasizes setting specific goals, finding practical solutions, and promoting positive changes in the relationship.

  4. Sex Therapy: Sex therapy aims to create a safe and supportive environment for individuals and couples to address their sexual concerns, improve sexual functioning, and foster sexual well-being. It encourages open and honest communication about sexuality and provides individuals and couples with the tools and strategies they need to enhance their sexual lives.

It's important to note that the effectiveness of couples therapy depends on various factors, including the specific issues, the willingness and commitment of both partners, and the skill and expertise of the therapist. Each approach has its strengths, and therapists may also integrate different techniques based on the couple's needs.

Does Couples Therapy Require Individual Therapy?

In couples therapy, the primary focus is on the couple's relationship dynamics and the issues they bring to the therapy. However, individual therapy can be an important component of the overall treatment process and may be recommended alongside couples therapy in certain situations. It is important, however, that if the couples therapist is seeing one individual, that they see both members of the couple with equal frequency in order to not develop too strong a therapeutic alliance with either party.  Here are a few scenarios where individual therapy may be beneficial alongside couples therapy:

  1. Individual Mental Health Concerns: Sometimes, one or both partners in a couple may have unresolved trauma, individual mental health challenges, or parenting challenges that are impeding couples therapy practice.  In such cases, individual therapy can help each partner address and work through their personal issues, which can contribute to healthier relationship dynamics.

  2. Complex Relationship Dynamics: In some cases, the relationship dynamics may be influenced by deep-rooted individual patterns or personal histories that are best explored in individual therapy. By addressing these individual factors separately, individuals can gain self-awareness, develop coping skills, and make personal changes that can positively impact the relationship.

  3. Emotion Regulation: Individual therapy can be useful when one or both partners struggle with managing their emotions, such as anger, anxiety, or depression. By addressing individual emotional regulation skills in therapy, partners can learn strategies to better regulate their emotions, which can improve their ability to engage in effective communication and problem-solving within the couple's therapy sessions. Emotional regulation therapy utilizes DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) to support greater mindfulness and ability to cope with strong emotions without hurting one’s partner.

It's important to note that the decision to engage in individual therapy alongside couples therapy is based on the unique circumstances and needs of each couple. The therapist will assess the situation and make recommendations accordingly. The ultimate goal is to support the couple in improving their relationship dynamics, fostering effective communication, and working towards shared goals.
