Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) are those among us who have a more sensitive nervous system than the average person. This can lead to increased levels of anxiety, and HSPs often find it difficult to cope in highly stimulating situations or environments. Thankfully, with the right treatment, individuals can learn how to manage their anxiety and gain a better understanding of their sensitivity.

It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of being a highly sensitive person so that you can take steps to support, manage, and communicate with others about your reactions to emotional and physical stimuli.   

Common characteristics of a highly sensitive person include heightened senses, reactivity to external stimulation, intense emotional reactions, heightened empathy, and an increased need for quiet time.

If you are easily overwhelmed by stimuli such as lights, sounds, or crowds and have difficulty with change, these are signs that you may be a highly sensitive person. Finally, if you find that you need more time alone than others, or feel the need to “recharge” after spending too much time around people, these may also be signs that you are an HSP. 

Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) usually also experience anxiety due to their heightened awareness of their surroundings and increased emotional sensitivity. 

These feelings can be overwhelming, leading HSPs to feel like they are constantly “on edge” or that something is wrong. To help manage anxiety, it helps to understand what causes it, practice mindfulness and stress-reduction techniques, and reach out for support from family, friends, and professionals.

One proven method for treating HSP anxiety is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).


CBT helps individuals identify and change problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may be contributing to the problem. It also teaches people how to recognize warning signs of stress or anxiety before it becomes too overwhelming. Additionally, it helps individuals learn how to tolerate uncomfortable feelings and how to control their reactions in high-stress situations. 

Another form of treatment is mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). This approach focuses on developing an awareness of one's thoughts and emotions that enables individuals to respond more effectively. 

MIndfulness-Based Stress Reduction also teaches strategies like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery that can be used in moments of distress. 

These practices can help HSPs better manage their anxiety and gain greater control over their feelings and reactions.

In order for treatment to be successful, it's important to find a therapist who is trained in working with HSPs and understands their unique needs. It's also beneficial to engage in self-care practices such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and enjoyable activities that bring joy. With the right treatment plan and support network, individuals can learn how to better manage their anxiety and live a fulfilling life.
