Why are Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) difficult to treat?
At Kairos Wellness Collective, we have several clinicians trained to treat BFRBs. However, we want clients to know at the outset that these behaviors can be very treatment resistant, even with the best care. Here is why:
Complex causes: BFRBs are complex disorders that can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetic, biological, psychological, and environmental factors. The complex nature of BFRBs means that effective treatment often requires a multifaceted approach that addresses multiple aspects of the disorder.
High rates of comorbidity: BFRBs often occur alongside other mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. These comorbid conditions can complicate treatment and require a more comprehensive approach.
Shame and stigma: Many people with BFRBs feel ashamed and embarrassed about their behaviors and may be reluctant to seek help. The shame and stigma surrounding BFRBs can make it difficult for individuals to open up to their therapist and engage in treatment.
Habitual nature: BFRBs are often deeply ingrained habits that are difficult to break. Treatment for BFRBs often involves breaking old habits and developing new ones, which can be a challenging and time-consuming process.
Trial and error needed with treatment options: Despite the prevalence of BFRBs, people respond very differently to treatments, and often we must cycle through a few approaches before we find the most effective for each individual.
Despite these challenges, effective treatment for BFRBs is possible with a combination of therapies tailored to the individual's specific needs and circumstances. It's important for individuals with BFRBs to work with a qualified mental health professional to develop a treatment plan that works for them.
At Kairos Wellness Collective is one of the few centers in Colorado with significant experience and competency with BFRBs and we look forward collaborating with you on a holistic approach to BFRB healing - please contact Kairos Wellness Collective to learn more today.
