What is Committed Action?

Committed Action is a form of therapeutic goal setting that naturally springs from an exercise of clarifying values.  Values help you understand directionally where you want to go and committed action is a concrete presentation of how you want to get there.

Committed action is a declaration to more fully live out your values.

Reduction in maladaptive symptoms of depression, anxiety, and OCD are happy by-products of committed action.  The goal becomes more than just “not feeling bad” or “reducing worry” but rather our aim is loftier – s.a. I will finally start my own OCD clinic after talking about it for years!

The goal of committed action should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.  The goal should be an embodiment of your most treasured values.

Once you have a strong Committed Action, the next step is to work on mindfulness skills to clear out negative thinking patterns that might get in the way of execution of the goal.  Committed Actions should be positive reinforcers in and of themselves – the more you succeed at your goal, the more confident you feel about continuing to develop your competency.

If you are interested in developing a deeper connection to your values and committing to more values-based actions, please consider working with a therapist or coach at Kairos Wellness Collective.
