Animal-Assisted Therapy

What is Animal-Assisted Therapy?

Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), also known as Canine Therapy, has been used for therapeutic intervention since the late 1700s. It was used in Europe by doctors, notably Francis Appia and Johann Christian Reil, to treat patients with various mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. In the 1800s, Florence Nightingale also adopted AAT practices in her nursing practice, using pets to cheer people up. By the mid-20th century, AAT was more widely adopted by hospitals and psychiatric facilities.

Canine Therapy has become increasingly popular in recent years due to advances in research and understanding of how animals can interact with humans therapeutically. Evidence suggests that interactions between dogs and humans can have positive effects on physical and mental health, including decreasing stress levels and improving overall mood. Canine Therapy has been used to treat a variety of conditions, such as depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. In addition to providing companionship and comfort for patients, canine therapy can also help to motivate individuals to complete tasks and engage in activities that they would not otherwise find enjoyable.

Overall, AAT is an effective treatment option for a range of physical and mental health conditions. It has been shown to reduce stress levels, improve overall well-being, and promote healing and recovery.

What are the Benefits of Animal-Assisted Therapy?

Animal-Assisted Therapy can help reduce stress, loneliness, and depression; as well as improve social skills, increase confidence, and strengthen relationships. Animal-Assisted Therapy or Canine Therapy also helps with physical healing by reducing pain levels and increasing mobility. Moreover, it can help people suffering from anxiety or trauma cope better by providing them with companionship and unconditional love. The presence of a dog provides comfort and security to those in need while promoting relaxation and self-expression. Ultimately, AAT is an effective way to promote mental health wellness and physical wellbeing.

How is Animal-Assisted Therapy used at Kairos?

Both Lacey Pacheco and Natalia Aniela utilize canine therapy as part of their therapeutic interventions. While not every client will benefit from the presence of an animal, many younger individuals are able to open up more quickly and co-regulate with our dogs.

For clients who are on the spectrum, having a distraction (ie. looking at, petting, and/or focusing on the dog, rather than maintaining eye contact with the therapist) can relieve the pressure to make eye-contact and can make sharing emotions significantly easier.

At Kairos Wellness Collective, we also encourage clients to bring their own emotional support animals. Many clients have brought their safety animals in for some sessions and sometimes all sessions, to increase their own comfort. Ultimately, at Kairos, we strive to create a healing and nurturing home-like environment, which is aided by our love of animals, as well as our casual, welcoming atmosphere to all family members!
