In November 2022, Colorado became the second state to decriminalize psilocybin, beginning the process of legalizing the substance for medicinal and therapeutic use. The Colorado regulatory boards are in the process of finalizing regulations around psilocybin consumption and treatment. Final regulations are expected to be set in motion by late 2024. In the meantime, Kairos Wellness Collective is beginning to offer psilocybin sessions following the guidelines to the letter of the current law the way that we understand it.

At Kairos Wellness Collective, we are excited about the potential benefits of Psilocybin-Assisted treatment and are excited to become one of the first centers in Boulder to offer it.

Psilocybin is an active ingredient from over 200 species of mushrooms, commonly known as “magic mushrooms.” Using microdoses of psilocybin for therapeutic treatment is being studied in depth in this current climate, for its potential transformative benefits. Early studies have proven that psilocybin has the capacity to decrease symptoms of chronic anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance dependency; and to improve and enhance overall mood, energy levels, cognitive abilities, focus, self-efficacy, and sleep.

Typically, one 4-hour long Psilocybin-Assisted session provides profound benefits and substantial changes in the brain and mental and emotional health and well being.

What about Psilocybin for OCD?

Psilocybin has potential therapeutic effects on various mental health conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, it's important to note that research on the use of psilocybin for OCD is still in its early stages, and more studies are needed to fully understand its efficacy and safety. Here is an overview of the research conducted so far:

There have been a few small-scale studies and case reports exploring the effects of psilocybin on OCD symptoms. These studies have shown some promising results, with participants experiencing reductions in obsessive thoughts, anxiety, and depression following psilocybin-assisted therapy sessions. However, the sample sizes have been limited, and the studies lacked control groups, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions.

Currently, there are ongoing clinical trials investigating the use of psilocybin for OCD, most notably a large psychedelic study at Johns Hopkins University

These studies aim to provide more robust evidence regarding the safety, efficacy, and optimal dosing regimens of psilocybin-assisted therapy for OCD. These trials typically involve carefully controlled protocols, including psychological support before, during, and after the psilocybin sessions.

Psilocybin interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain, primarily targeting the 5-HT2A receptors. This interaction is thought to modulate brain networks involved in cognitive and emotional processes, potentially leading to therapeutic effects. The specific mechanisms through which psilocybin may impact OCD symptoms are not yet fully understood and require further investigation.

It's important to emphasize that the use of psilocybin for OCD or any other mental health condition should only be pursued within the context of well-designed clinical trials or under the guidance of qualified professionals.

Self-medication or recreational use of psilocybin is strongly discouraged, as it may carry significant risks and legal consequences. Individuals with OCD seeking alternative or complementary treatments should consult with healthcare professionals who can provide evidence-based recommendations and guidance.
