Protocol for KAC and KAP Sessions

Intake Diagnostic Protocols and Recommendations for Ketamine Assisted Coaching and Psychotherapy Sessions

We are thrilled to offer Ketamine Assisted Coaching and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Sessions at Kairos Wellness Collective.

The use of Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, in partnership with psychotherapy, has become a groundbreaking new offering that partners the mental health community with the medical community.  Ketamine for mental health is dosed at a lower level than for medical anesthesia, and induces a state of unreality, temporary unusual thoughts, and sometimes euphoria (known colloquially as a “trip” or a “journey”).

Unlike SSRIs, Ketamine is metabolized and eliminated by the body around 10-12 hours after ingestion.  The positive effects, however, can last weeks or months, and may permanently improve an individual’s mood regulation and so much more.  There are not any known long-term side effects or addiction risks and ketamine treatment is safe, controlled, and easily administered orally.

In Ketamine Assisted Coaching or Psychotherapy sessions, your provider will oversee the administration of ketamine (through lozenge form, at Kairos Wellness Collective) and then create an empowering and transformative container of presence, witnessing your experience throughout the duration of the dissociative state that comes along with ketamine use.

This dissociative state inherent in a Ketamine Assisted Coaching or Psychotherapy session can often unlock strong emotions.  Clients report moments of intense clarity, incredible revelations, and major shifts in thinking and feeling, either during or in the days following a Ketamine Assisted Coaching session.

Ketamine Assisted Coaching/Psychotherapy can help resolve trauma in a deep-seated way, unparalleled to other therapies currently available. This makes it a revolutionary option for treatment-resistant anxiety, OCD, and depression. The effects from Ketamine Assisted Coaching or Psychotherapy can be far-reaching and long-lasting, greatly enhancing self-knowledge and self-compassion, emotional and spiritual growth, and nervous system rebalance.

First Steps to Planning Your Ketamine Assisted Coaching or Psychotherapy Session at Kairos:

The first step is to obtain a prescription for Ketamine lozenges.

1. If you are not already working with a psychiatrist who prescribes Ketamine, we recommend Dr. Thomas at Clarity Psychiatry. You can reach his office at:

678-459-5493
info@claritypsychiatry.com

You will need to complete the intake paperwork at Clarity prior to scheduling your intake session. We recommend getting this done quickly to keep the ball rolling, as the process of receiving your Ketamine prescription in hand takes 1-2 weeks, start to finish. After your Intake Appointment with Dr. Thomas, he will call in your ketamine prescription, typically to the Apothecary Shoppe (see below for contact details). It generally takes the Apothecary Shoppe 3 business days to fill your prescription, and then another 5-10 days for the prescription to be shipped.

2. After you have scheduled your appointment with your ketamine prescriber, call our office to schedule your preparation session as well as your series of KAC and integration sessions.

What to expect during a KAC or KAP Session at Kairos:

  • You will be expected to bring your Ketamine Lozenges to each session. Your practitioner will help manage dosage.

  • Your Ketamine Assisted Coaching or Psychotherapy session will run 2-3 hours. Please expect longer for the first session.

  • Every experience is unique. Ketamine affects every person differently.  One person may have a different experience each time.

    • To read more about our Clinical Director Natalia’s personal KAP experiences, please peruse our blog posts: https://www.kairoswellnesscollective.com/blog

  • You can communicate with your practitioner whether you would like your ketamine journey to be interactive or more of a hands-off, self-led experience.

  • You will be lying down, for most of your session. We have plenty of props to make sure that you are comfortable. Weighted blankets and headsets will be provided.

  • It is helpful to set an intention for your session, and to also be open to where the experience takes you.

  • Ketamine is a dissociative drug and you may experience temporarily feeling disconnected from your body. Remember that you are safe and in a safe, supportive environment, and allow yourself to let go.

  • You may have a restful experience or you may experience dreamlike visions or ideas popping into your head. It is not uncommon for new insights or thoughts to come to mind either during or after the session.

  • You may feel a little disoriented after your session. We recommend clearing your schedule for the remainder of the day after your Ketamine Assisted Coaching or Psychotherapy session and for the first half of the next day, if your session is in the evening. This allows your body to lean into the relaxed state post-ketamine and allows your mental and emotional bodies space to integrate your mental health journey.

  • Vivid dreams are common for the next few days.

Preparation for Your First KAC/KAP Session at Kairos:

  • Make sure you have availability for a full 2 hour session (and some time after for as long as you may feel disoriented).

  • Please arrange transportation  for after the session to take you home (driving after a KAP/KAC session can be a danger due to disorientation).

  • Please avoid consuming any food or drink at least 2 hours before the session, to avoid nausea.

  • Please wear comfortable clothing.

  • Please warn your therapist if you’re prone to nausea or motion sickness.

Other Health Considerations:

  • 16 is usually the youngest age recommended for Ketamine sessions. You will need to gain clearance from your primary care provider, as well as find a ketamine prescriber who is comfortable prescribing to minors. (See resources below for recommendations)

  • Clients with a chronic medical condition (e.g. thyroid disease, renal conditions, anemia, etc.) will need to provide a copy of lab results obtained within the past 12 months. If you have a chronic medical condition and have not obtained lab results in the past 12 months, lab results will be required to proceed with KAC sessions and may be ordered by a Kairos Wellness Collective provider or by patients’ primary care providers or specialists.

  • Clients with high blood pressure may not be able to participate in Ketamine Assisted Coaching sessions until their blood pressure normalizes. Blood pressure is measured by our Ketamine Assisted Coaching staff prior to each session.

  • Patients 30 years or older who have a 1st (e.g. parent, sibling) or 2nd degree relative (e.g. grandparent, aunt/uncle) that experienced a major cardiac event (e.g. heart attack) before the age of 40 may need to provide a copy of EKG results obtained within the past 3 years or obtain an EKG with their primary care provider.

  • All patients aged 40 years or older may need to provide general lab results (e.g. CBC, CMP, Folate, Vitamin D, & TSH) obtained within the past 2 years. If they have not been obtained, the labs may be ordered by a Kairos Wellness Collective provider or by patients’ primary care providers or specialists and forwarded/emailed to Kairos.

    Kairos Wellness Collective Cancellation Policy

    • Due to the longer nature of the appointments and the difficulty filling the spot last minute, we require 72 hours notice to cancel or reschedule Ketamine Assisted Coaching or Psychotherapy sessions. Please reach out to our Admin Support Team for questions about this policy.
